Heya Guys 'n' Gals,
at the weekend I watched Total Recall for the first time. I really liked it, though my opinion about media differs often with the mainstream. But this isn’t the thing I wanna to talk about today. I like to talk about what I expected. There was one thing I was a little bit bummed out. to summarize the plot for those who haven’t seen the Movie, it’s about a guy in the future.
At the start of the movie, we get an action sequence where he and a woman running from some robocops. he seems to be skilled but yet gets captured and the woman escapes. Then, he wakes up. apparently, it was just a dream. His wife, another woman and not the one from the dream, asks him about it and if he was alone in the dream, but he deflects it and lies.
At that point I thought, he may be in a life simulation and the robocops want information from him. It isn’t.
Then he gets off to work and a lot of mechanics how the world works and people are introduced which will come back at a later point of the story. Over the course of this part, the viewer gets explained what Rekall is. It is a way to inject people with fake memories and let them escape their boring lives. Of course or Guy is interested in that. Well, he finally gets an opportunity to try it and he chooses the secret spy experience. Then the story really starts. As the memory starts it was interrupted and robocops come in and he beats them up to his surprise. He never knew he has those skills. To make it short, he is, in reality, a secret spy and not just one, the best there is. Then he saves the world. The End.
What? Really? First of I expected a big twist that all that was just the Memory and in the third part he comes back into his normal life and he has to struggle with what is now real and what’s not. Well, they used that at some point, but turns out it was just a ruse of the robocops to catch him.
For me, it was just too convenient that his hidden skills got triggered right after he sits down in the memory chair. If they would have done something with that before this scene it would be more plausible for me that this is real. Maybe, when he’s at the bar a brawl breaks out and he beats up three guys and wonders what happened. But all they did was the dream, which just could have been a dream.
Anyway, these were just some thing that bothered me in a pretty good story. Well, and of course, he needed to be the best of the best spies…
Talking about the story of Total Recall, I think it fits to talk about Story analysis.
Watching intelligent people talking about movies and the philosophy and secrets behind it made me wonder if I could develop a skill like that as well. I like to watch a show or a movie and see the structure behind it. For movies, it seems to be easier than TV Shows. I know this could destroy the experience what movies and shows have for me but somehow I like to see structure, secrets and meanings of those. Not just for having this skill but for work. As a comic artist, I wanna tell you compelling Stories. Stories you can think about, with some hidden things which make you happy that you found them and make you think about things.
Recently my parents and I watched a Show on TV which is basically a cheap version of Murder she wrote in my opinion. Cheap is the right word if you ask me. It is about an Author who moved into a Village to escape the City Noise or something like that. Apparently, in this village every week gets somebody murdered. the Episode we watched made me realize that this show isn’t a good detective show. As a viewer, you like to guess who did it while the Episode runs. But all the show is doing is giving a clue towards a person, the woman confronts the person and either it was the person or not. In the last five minutes we get an obvious clue she confronts the guy, the guy explains why he did it and at the end, the woman gets a personal highlight nobody cares about. As I complained about that fact, my dad just said the right thing. The show isn’t about the murder, it is about the woman. It doesn’t matter who did it. It is just about her and her personal stuff she experiences while the Episode runs. I mean people may enjoy stuff like that but I don’t like it. I think a Crime show should be about the Crime. The view should be able to collect the clues and solve it by themselves. It is satisfying as heck when it turns out your guess was right.
